After some research, I've developed a general structure and organization for my proposed disability network. This is still in the incredibly early stages, and subject to changes, additions, reductions, etc. The network will assume an audience that has a personal interest or stake, but very little background knowledge (ie, parents with a child showing symptoms, or teachers welcoming such a child into their class for the first time). I feel like there is an immense amount of critical information out there that needs to be distilled into a readable format for people who need relatively simple, straightforward information and help immediately.
Disabilities in the School System Network
General pages
- Introduction to disabilities - facts, myths, realities, onus of responsibility for managing a disabled child's needs
- Relevant laws, edicts, etc. related to reasonable disability accommodation in the classroom on the provincial and federal levels (Alberta only specifically or more general?)
- Strategies, mindsets and resources for being [parent, teacher, family member, etc?] to a child with a disability
Disability categories (separate page for each individual disability including all information listed below. Not intended to be 100% comprehensive, but will focus on disabilities that are more common, well known, misunderstood, and/or have particular implications for education and long term success)
- Physical Disabilities
- Mental Disabilities
- Learning Disabilities
- Emotional Disabilities
For each disability:
- Basic Disability Information
Includes general overview, warning signs, symptoms, prevalence, treatment options and possibilities, common co-morbid disabilities, resources for more information and/or personal support
- In the Classroom
Any implications for education and/or in school behavior, needed adaptations and/or accomodations, appropriate support staff that may be available at the school or district levels, some brief general advice if appropriate
I expect to expand this outline as I go more depth in my research. I have also started reviewing other FACTs blogs and outside resources for ideas and inspiration as to more content or ways of organizing that will make it easy for users to find exactly what they are looking for.
Good work. I think this is exactly what we need. I did not read the details. We will go over that as a team.
