Damian's Flag

Definitions:

Sincere at Heart -Am honest, truthful, thoughtful and compassionate, and respects the same qualities in others

In my daily life, I always try to be honest and truthful whenever possible. I strongly believe that in the end, being sincere will have a greater positive effect on my life and those of others, regardless of any tempting short term benefits from being dishonest. It also allows me to have a clear mind free of guilt or hidden emotions, and always showing my true face to others. I value and am attracted to other people who share the same values, traits and outlook on life.

Competent - Desire to be skilled at everything I do, and always do a good job

I hate to do anything badly. When I get involved in something new, I am driven to read, read, read and learn as much as I can. I would rather pass a task on to a more competent person than do it myself when I am certain I would do a substandard job. I like the feeling of pride that comes with having done something right and to the very best of my ability. I believe that I would be doing myself a disservice if I accepted 'just ok' performances if I have the opportunity to do better.

Economical - Concerned with being careful with money and resources, and doing things in the most effective manner possible.

I grew up in rural Alberta - my family was not poor, but we weren't rich either. I learned early on the value of a dollar, and am always interested in where my money and resources are going. Because I desire to be competent in everything I do, I taught myself principles of financial management and adhere to them. I like to avoid automated payments and direct deposits as much as possible, so that every dollar I save and spend has to go through my hands. This way, I am never caught off guard by unexpected balances and it serves as a check against overspending. I pay all my bills personally every month, and prefer to receive paychecks instead of direct deposit. I like to make efficient use of my money, and that principle has spread to other aspects of my life. I like to keep tabs on all incoming and outgoing resources, and always know what my status is at any given time.

Thrives on Encouragement - Strongly affected by praise and encouragement from others, and encourages others to do their best and utilize their skills and talents

When my work and effort is recognized and encouraged by others, I am much more motivated to do my best. I have noticed that in a vacuum, my work quality will start to slip as I lose focus. I need feedback and encouragement from others to maintain my peak productivity. In my role as a teacher, I try to do the same thing for people under my supervision. I believe simple recognition is an underrated thing in modern society, and a little of it goes a very long way with most people. Everyone wants to be recognized for their efforts.

Sensitive - Always mindful of and respectful the feelings and emotions of other people

I have always had a high degree of empathy. I have an innate ability to view situations from many different perspectives, especially those of others. I am able to understand another person's point of view even if I personally disagree with it. I am also able to deduce from those perspectives what the reaction and feelings of those other people are likely to be, and am able to adapt my interactions with them to accommodate. I have experienced being ignored or marginalized many times, and can easily identify with others in situations where those feelings could happen even when other people do not notice. This is especially essential in my field of education.

Personal mission statement:  I am a sincere person who values competence and intelligent economical decisions in myself and others. I strive to be a positive force who encourages others to improve, while always being sensitive to their feelings and needs.
